Why Community Radio Matters
In today’s media climate of corporate dominance, WMNF’s singular position in our market--and in the hearts of our audience--has taken on deeper significance. Independent media fulfills community needs on multiple levels:
- Offering viewpoints shut out by mass media
- Playing music outside the mainstream’s corporate-driven business model
- Highlighting activities in our community that deserve your attention
It is up to those of us who value access to independent media to do all we can to nurture and protect this community resource we have so carefully and lovingly built. As listener-supporters, we accept this responsibility with each contribution we make.

- Q. The Community built the wonderful new radio station! That means WMNF owns the building, right?
- A. Not yet. As with any construction project of that magnitude, WMNF incurred unanticipated costs. Just like if you were to build a house, you'd still have to pay for it after construction. WMNF is now taking $100,000 annually out of our operating budget for the life of the mortgage. Your contribution will allow WMNF to better serve our listeners, if you help!
- Q. What can I do to help?
- A. You can make a contribution today that will be applied to the principal on the mortgage.
- Q. If the mortgage is paid off early, what will WMNF do with the money that’s currently earmarked for that?
- A. We'll spend it on new program development. This includes youth programming and a slate of music, news and public affairs shows we'll carry on our forthcoming High Definition channel, a second WMNF for the airwaves. These shows will also be on-line. We'll spend the money on resources to carry out these extra initiatives. Furthermore, we’ll be removing the burden of the mortgage from future generations.
